We are here talking about a television show led by Aamir khan. Its his attempt to raise awareness about important socio-economic issues which have crippled the country for so long. I have watched all the episodes and I feel good watching the show. I feel hopeful and get excited thinking what this show can do. Ofcourse he himself is incapable of implementing the changes in the actual system but the show has immense potential to draw attention of the right people who are in the system and have the capacity to bring those changes. Well, we can just hope.
But then I go on the web and I read lot of NEGATIVE about the show. There is so much criticism and pessimism. It makes me kinda sad.
This is what I read and hear all the time!
Aamir is making money!
Who is not and who doesn’t want to? People make shows like “Big Boss” and make millions! People make “saas-bahu” dramas and mint money! Do they add any value to the the society? Do they bring any positive change? Not that I am completely against such shows but nobody objects or questions how much money producers make from such shows! Aamir is not shooting people dead to make money. He is not harming anyone. In fact, it is probably one of the most ethical and rewarding ways to make money. I don’t even know if he is making money from this and I don’t have the slightest of interest in finding it out. Its all out of focus. Shouldn’t our focus be on the show and what he is trying to achieve rather than his pay-packet??
The show is melodramatic with people crying!
Well, life IS drama and reality IS harsh. When he and the audiences get teary, I find it hard to see it as melodramatic or acted out. It looks real to me. Anger and compassion are the two predominant emotions that arise when I watch the show. It doesn’t hit us until it happnes to us. Imagine if we or our loved ones are involved in such a tragic situation!!!!!!!
Nothing is going to change!
Yes, I agree. Nothing will change —unless we try! Change takes time. Nothing will happen overnight but the very first step is important. We live in the age of instant gratification and want everything quick. Positive change is good no matter on what scale it is. Even if the show conveys the right message to one person, its a success! There is nothing to lose. If for instance, after watching the road safety episode, if one person decides not to over drink and drive, lot of lives can be saved! In the country with billion people, saving 3–4 lives might not excite everyone. But that is significant because no LIFE is INSIGNIFICANT.
Yeah its all good but………….what can we do?
We can do a lot. We can start from our home. We can start with people close to us —family, friends, relatives, colleagues. Charity begins at home.
But what can I do sitting here in Australia? May be not much apart from writing this and sharing it on facebook and twitter, and doing monetary donations here and there. But I can do better and have the desire to do better. I will make sure that I wear a seatbelt when I am in India next. I will tell my dad to buy the next car with more airbags and not just two front airbags. I will help if someone is lying injured on the road…. and much much more!
We all can. We don’t need to change the world. We change ourselves and the world around us changes automatically.
