Have you ever caught yourself trying to find the best, trying to do the best, trying to do anything that you are doing — to perfection. I had read about this idea of “good enough” a long time ago but it stayed with me. It keeps coming back to me lately.
We often put so much time and effort in finding the best! It could be as trivial as finding the best hotel for your next holiday, best airline to fly or buying the best phone available. It could also be as important as deciding on a place to live or finding the best school for the kids. We look for the best. We like the best. We also want to do the best in our creative endeavours. A writer can spend hours, days or months on a writing piece in the pursuit of making it perfect. This relentless pursuit of doing the best and making it perfect may lead to great invention, discovery or a beautiful art form.
However, sometimes its good to settle for “good enough” because ‘best’ is temporary, relative and often an illusion. The pursuit of perfection and finding the best can be overwhelming and stressful. The zone of “good enough” often lies somewhere in the spectrum with two opposite ends— ‘need’ and ‘want’. Only you can decide where you draw your line of “good enough” in this spectrum.
But the idea is to find your “good enough” zone and go with it.
Sporadically, its good to reflect back and let go of the need to find the best and settle for “good enough” becasue more often than not, it turns out to be Good…and Enough….
