As the technology grows at an exponential rate, we are slowly turning into zombies walking around with our fractured attention. The rise of artificial intelligence is slowly stripping us of our own intelligence and algorithms have started dictating our actions. While all of this happening, we are gradually becoming numb to our most basic human abilities; that is our ability to hear, see, taste and touch. One of the most precious gifts we humans have is our ability to listen and understand other human beings. But I am afraid we are losing that gift.
Listening has become rare and acquired skill. Not many truly listen. Majority of us listen to reply. Hardly ever we listen to just listen and understand. This reminds me of my grandmother who was hearing-imapaired. She was unable to hear but always understood what I was trying to say to her. Always. This happened because she had no pre-conceived agenda on coming back to me. She truly listened despite having no ability to listen. Spoken words make communication easier but not necessarily effective.
Listen with patience.
Listen with intent.
Listen with curiosity.
True listening happens when you have desire to learn something new and not having the desire to demonstrate what you already know.
So, are you truly listening?
